New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: FaceTime-style calls with an AI Companion (Live2D and long-term memory)

Show HN: FaceTime-style calls with an AI Companion (Live2D and long-term memory) 10 by summerlee9611 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I built Beni ( https://thebeni.ai ), a web app for real-time video calls with an AI companion. The idea started as a pretty simple question: text chatbots are everywhere, but they rarely feel present. I wanted something closer to a call, where the character actually reacts in real time (voice, timing, expressions), not just “type, wait, reply”. Beni is basically: A Live2D avatar that animates during the call (expressions + motion driven by the conversation) Real-time voice conversation (streaming response, not “wait 10 seconds then speak”) Long-term memory so the character can keep context across sessions The hardest part wasn’t generating text, it was making the whole loop feel synchronized: mic input, model response, TTS audio, and Live2D animation all need to line up or it feels broken immediately. I ended up spending more time on state manageme...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: A small programming language where everything is a value

Show HN: A small programming language where everything is a value 5 by jcparkyn | 0 comments on Hacker News. This is a hobby project of mine that I started a few years ago to learn about programming language implementation. It was created 95% without AI, although a few recent commits include code from Gemini CLI. I started out following Crafting Interpreters, but gradually branched off that until I had almost nothing left in common. Tech stack: Rust, Cranelift (JIT compilation), LALRPOP (parser).

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: AskUCP – UCP protocol explorer showing all products on Shopify

Show HN: AskUCP – UCP protocol explorer showing all products on Shopify 5 by possiblelion | 1 comments on Hacker News. On January 11th, Google and Shopify announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (ucp.dev). It's an open standard that lets any application query products across e-commerce platforms without needing APIs, integrations, or middlemen. AskUCP is one of the first applications built on it. Right now, if you want to buy something online, you have to know which store sells it. You go to Amazon, or you go to a Shopify store, or you go to Etsy. Each one has its own search, its own interface, its own checkout. The experience is fragmented because the infrastructure is siloed. UCP changes this at the protocol level. If products are described in a standard format, any application can discover them. You don't need permission from each platform. You don't need to build integrations. Anybody or any AI agent just querys the protocol. AskUCP is designed to be a single pane ...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: The Hessian of tall-skinny networks is easy to invert

Show HN: The Hessian of tall-skinny networks is easy to invert 10 by rahimiali | 1 comments on Hacker News. It turns out the inverse of the Hessian of a deep net is easy to apply to a vector. Doing this naively takes cubically many operations in the number of layers (so impractical), but it's possible to do this in time linear in the number of layers (so very practical)! This is possible because the Hessian of a deep net has a matrix polynomial structure that factorizes nicely. The Hessian-inverse-product algorithm that takes advantage of this is similar to running backprop on a dual version of the deep net. It echoes an old idea of Pearlmutter's for computing Hessian-vector products. Maybe this idea is useful as a preconditioner for stochastic gradient descent?
