New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: I built an open-source tool to make on-call suck less

Show HN: I built an open-source tool to make on-call suck less 13 by aray07 | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN, I am building an open source platform to make on-call better and less stressful for engineers. We are building a tool that can silence alerts and help with debugging and root cause analysis. We also want to automate tedious parts of being on-call (running runbooks manually, answering questions on Slack, dealing with Pagerduty). Here is a quick video of how it works: https://youtu.be/m_K9Dq1kZDw I hated being on-call for a couple of reasons: * Alert volume: The number of alerts kept increasing over time. It was hard to maintain existing alerts. This would lead to a lot of noisy and unactionable alerts. I have lost count of the number of times I got woken up by alert that auto-resolved 5 minutes later. * Debugging: Debugging an alert or a customer support ticket would need me to gain context on a service that I might not have worked on before. These companies used many obse...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Hooper – AI-driven stats and highlights for basketball play

Show HN: Hooper – AI-driven stats and highlights for basketball play 7 by grub007 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey everyone, OP here. Wanted to share a bit more about Hooper — I started building it with a good friend of mine six months ago. We play a lot of pickup together and were arguing about who has a better jump shot and ended up hacking together an app to settle it The way Hooper works is you can record yourself using the app and ideally a tripod (optional). The app will track everyone, whether its a solo practice, a 3v3, or a 5v5. We think there’s a lot of stuff out there for basketball drills but what we really wanted Hooper to be for is actual game play. That means, it can do things like track multiple players, sync two half court recordings, and differentiate 2s vs 3s. Once you finish recording, it’ll process for a bit and then ask you to tag yourself (and optionally other players). Then it spits back out a few things: you can watch the full footage as well as a clipped ve...

Launch HN: Traceloop (YC W23) – Detecting LLM Hallucinations with OpenTelemetry 3 by GalKlm | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hey everyone, we are Nir and Gal from Traceloop ( https://ift.tt/cKjI0Ps ). We help teams understand when their LLM apps are failing or hallucinating at scale. See a demo: https://ift.tt/jlr7IqK or try it yourself at https://ift.tt/MkGs78D . When moving your LLM app to production, significant scale makes it harder for engineers and data scientists alike to understand when their LLM is hallucinating or returning malformed responses. When you get to millions of calls to OpenAI a month, methods like “LLM as a judge” can’t work at a reasonable cost or latency. So, what most people we talked to usually do is sample some generations by hand, maybe for some specific important customers, and manually look for errors or hallucinations. Traceloop is a monitoring platform that detects when your LLM app fails. Under the hood, we built real-time versions of known metrics like ...

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Why are PWA user install stats so hard to find?

Ask HN: Why are PWA user install stats so hard to find? 4 by chr15m | 0 comments on Hacker News. I want to know how many people install progressive web apps. All of the sources I could find say the same things over and over: - "...market is expected to reach a value of 10.77 billion dollars." - "PWAs cater to over 6.3 billion smartphone users globally." - Dramatic improvements in speed, conversions, retention rate etc. These stats don't tell me how many users and what proportion of users actually add PWAs to their home screen. For companies like Starbucks who have deployed a PWA I'd love to know what proportion of their web traffic ends up installing the PWA, and how it compares to native for example. Does anybody know where I can find this information generally? The closest thing I could find to real data is this: - Apple said PWAs had "very low user adoption" when they recently cancelled (and then un-cancelled) them for EU users. - A Chrome OS...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Mandala – Automatically save, query and version Python computations

Show HN: Mandala – Automatically save, query and version Python computations 14 by amakelov | 0 comments on Hacker News. `mandala` is a framework I wrote to automate tracking ML experiments for my research. It differs from other experiment tracking tools by making persistence, query and versioning logic a generic part of the programming language itself, as opposed to an external logging tool you must learn and adapt to. The goal is to be able to write expressive computational code without thinking about persistence (like in an interactive session), and still have the full benefits of a versioned, queriable storage afterwards. Surprisingly, it turns out that this vision can pretty much be achieved with two generic tools: 1. a memoization+versioning decorator, `@op`, which tracks inputs, outputs, code and runtime dependencies (other functions called, or global variables accessed) every time a function is called. Essentially, this makes function calls replace logging: if you want somet...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Sonatino – small audio dev board based on ESP32-S3

Show HN: Sonatino – small audio dev board based on ESP32-S3 4 by sonatino | 3 comments on Hacker News. Hi! My name is Ben, and I recently updated my audio dev board "Sonatino" after receiving a lot of good feedback from the initial launch a year ago. I began working on this after building a few projects that required audio capabilities. I was getting tired of wiring up external DACs and amplifiers to ESP32 boards, so I decided to look for a more compact, integrated solution. The available options either had larger footprints, non-standard connectors, or features that I didn't typically need for my projects. That's when I started working on a custom PCB that could be a sort of "audio swiss army knife". The result was Sonatino. Some have criticized the use of a DAC and ADC that support HD sample rates and bit depths, especially when other factors will limit the usefulness of anything over 44.1kHz/16-bit audio. I actually agree - HD audio in this context is ...
