New top story on Hacker News: Launch HN: Needl (YC S22) – Simple search across all your apps

Launch HN: Needl (YC S22) – Simple search across all your apps 7 by MaxKeenan | 5 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, we’re Max and James, co-founders of Needl ( https://www.needl.tech ). Needl is a single search bar for all your apps that lets you find any document, message, or file you need. Here’s a demo video: https://ift.tt/rfWN8jb . We’ve all struggled to find information and couldn’t remember if it was shared over Gmail or Slack or Notion. Most of us have hundreds of thousands of emails, documents, messages, etc., and only a small fraction are actually useful. Internal search is even harder than web search in some ways: with web search, there are dozens of right answers and millions of previous searches to train ranking models, but internally (i.e. on your own data), there is only one right answer and limited training data. Needl’s value prop is twofold: it unifies all of your information together and provides better search than existing platforms (here’s an example of Needl comp...

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Where Are All the Parties?

Ask HN: Where Are All the Parties? 6 by throwaway_party | 2 comments on Hacker News. 10 years ago, there were a lot of parties in my life, and now there are none. Where have they gone? Have you seen the same, and have you managed to revive your party life? I remember parties at friends places, for housewarmings, birthdays, holidays, sports games, barbecuing, karaoke, whatever. I remember parties at work, for people joining the team, for people leaving, for projects kicking off or finishing. Now my kids are older and it seems that only they get to party. I try my best, invited some people for parties, but we never seem to get invites in return. Hypotheses I have so far: - I'm just getting old (closing in on 50) and people my age don't party anymore - COVID happened and we still haven't restarted partying the way we used to - I'm just unlucky with my set of friends and need to renew my friendships Very interested in both macro trends (eg is partying overall just down) ...

Ask HN: Should I accept all cookies? (and clear them shortly after?) 10 by ogeiczvm | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi, My browsing setup on desktop is Firefox with temporary containers, ublock origin and a few other plugins. On iOS I'm using Firefox Focus most of the time with the occasional Safari window in Private Browsing mode (which has a similar behaviour to temporary containers plugin, all tabs are completely isolated). On desktop ublock origin hides all cookie popups (thus not accepting anything) but on iOS I've been going through their hoops of going into advanced mode, toggling everything off and 'confirm my choices'. I've been doing this on principle only because the average lifetime of a tab (session) is only a few minutes so all cookies would be deleted anyway. But recently I was wondering - have I been doing it wrong all along? I'm not sure how cookie tracking works these days as last time I dealt with them server side was back in the PHP3 days but...

Show HN: Spall – WASM-based profiler for JavaScript and C in ~5k lines of Odin 10 by crdavidson | 0 comments on Hacker News. [I'm the author] Spall is a web-accessible profiler that I made to help my web-dev friends load gigabyte+ JSON traces without lunch-break-long load times. Recently, Spall got experimental support for auto-tracing with binary traces (along with an in-progress native-port, to give it more memory headroom), which was used to help track down and fix some hard-to-spot lock contention issues in the Odin-language compiler. I demoed it at the Handmade Seattle conference in October, https://ift.tt/bd1K2sl , with a head-to-head against Perfetto, another big web profiler. I'll be around to answer any questions. Thanks for looking at my project! If you like Spall, you can catch my other projects over at https://ift.tt/0hxiKP9 . If you happen to be hiring I'd love to hear from you. Looking for something fun and new to do after a long sabbatical, working on cool...

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Would a tech recession vindicate calls for tech unionization?

Ask HN: Would a tech recession vindicate calls for tech unionization? 8 by Apocryphon | 0 comments on Hacker News. For years, the idea of unionizing software engineers and other tech workers has been mostly a fringe idea. While there have been some high-profile examples such as the Kickstarter union and organizing in the notoriously cutthroat video games industry, the idea has been largely scoffed at. The idea is that because SWEs are in such hot demand, it is one of the very few examples where employment relations benefit workers greatly. Now with large scale layoffs already and who knows what else on the horizon, it seems like that leverage, once present during the low interest rates environment of the pandemic bubble, is fast disappearing. So does that vindicate the idea that tech workers should have codified the benefits they enjoyed during the good times, through unionizing?
