New top story on Hacker News: How to intentionally throttle CPU on a M1 MacBook?

How to intentionally throttle CPU on a M1 MacBook? 7 by dsnr | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hi everyone, I recently had no choice but to upgrade to an M1 Macbook from an Intel-based one. I did not want to upgrade, as I’m working on a software for which performance on mid-range machines is critical, but unfortunately the previous laptop gave up on me. Since M1 macbooks are so much more powerful than previous generations, is there a way to intentionally slow it down to be able to test my program on a slower machine? One way I can think of, is to run the program inside a VM, but that would slow down the development loop.

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Checksum.sh verify every install script

Show HN: Checksum.sh verify every install script 21 by gavinuhma | 8 comments on Hacker News. The pattern of downloading and executing installation scripts without verifying them has bothered me for a while. I started messing around with a way to verify the checksum of scripts before I execute them. I've found it a really useful tool for installing things like Rust or Deno. It's written entirely as a shell script, and it's easy to read and understand what's happening. I hope it may be useful to someone else!

Cloudflare only charge for the cost of GET operations. Actual "bandwidth" is free. For comparison, Amazon S3 is $90/TB. So, the equivalent cost would be 300,000TB x $90= $27 million. Ask HN: Where to publish a critical work with potentially offensive content 17 by bryanrasmussen | 18 comments on Hacker News. I have a publication on Medium https://ift.tt/ieJFNCM where I publish some critical works, some poetry, some science fiction, humour etc. I have been pushing around writing a piece that might end up being quite long on Mark Twain and Racism, as it pertains to Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, and Pudd'nhead Wilson. And of course in writing this there are some well known racial slurs (and some antiquated, unfamiliar ones) that will have to be quoted and referred to, which I expect would probably end up getting my account automatically banned. The article will be showing Huckleberry Finn and Pudd'nhead Wilson as anti-racist works, so don't suggest any actually pro-racism sites. I suppose this is an argument for hosting one's own blog, but I do have a lot on my plate already. So just is there a platform for this kind of thin...

Ask HN: How to Visually Design Tutorials? 3 by elbear | 1 comments on Hacker News. I like to write articles about technology or to create tutorials. I'm starting to feel the need to know how to structure them visually in a way that makes the right information standout. Sorry, if this is not very clear. For example, I find that just using headings is not enough for this. Does anyone have any reading resources about how to use design to improve readability? I think that's basically what I need.

Show HN: My book for programmers called “Junior to Senior” was published today 4 by dglass | 2 comments on Hacker News. After a four year journey, the book I wrote to help junior and mid-level programmers earn their first promotion was published today . The book is titled Junior to Senior: Career Advice for the Ambitious Programmer and is now available on Holloway’s website[0]. I truly believe that soft-skills are what makes the difference between a good programmer and a great one. I also believe that anyone can learn the soft-skills needed to accelerate their programming career. I wish I’d had better resources to learn these things in the early years of my career and I’m hoping this book will become a useful resource for the next generation of programmers to build successful careers. What this book covers: Choosing a career path: generalist vs. specialist What makes you a senior engineer? How to deal with feeling like an impostor How to build trust and work with your manager How to...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: We built a tool that automatically generates your API Tests

Show HN: We built a tool that automatically generates your API Tests 14 by Wissmueller | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hi, this is Mish and Sebastian. We are working on Step CI - a fully automated API testing platform for developers. Step CI works programming-language independent and for different API paradigms (REST, GraphQL, XML). Our CLI and test runner are available on GitHub ( https://ift.tt/E4SPhUR ) under the MPLv2 license. Since our last launch, Step CI is now able to generate automated tests for your API based on your OpenAPI (Swagger) spec. This saves you a lot of time as you never have to write and maintain your tests again! We would like to invite you to try our tool and give us feedback! Please star us on GitHub, if you like what we are working on! We are very thankful for your attention and any feedback or suggestions we receive from you :) Mish and Sebastian from Germany

Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at? 25 by pr07ecH70r | 20 comments on Hacker News. In the past years I've been quite diluted in my personal and professional life. Changed several jobs, and in my hobbies, I am jumping from one project to another. How do you stay focused? How do you find 1 thing you are really good at and stick with it? Is there a book or a blog teaching this? Although, it seems quite trivial, for me this is a huge live hurdle. Any tips are highly appreciated!

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)?

Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)? 5 by mouzogu | 0 comments on Hacker News. I get stressed out a lot by my work. The people, and the lack of autonomy. It invades my evenings, my nights, I spend sometimes hours unable to sleep dreading the next day. I don't have any autonomy. I'm treated as a resource to be "used". And I work with people I don't respect personally or professionally. I have been looking for a way out for a while, but let's just say that quitting or finding another job is NOT an option for now, for the sake of argument - to hopefully get some actionable advice. I already stopped caring about my work. But my personality finds it difficult to ignore things that are wrong. Sometimes I look at other colleagues communication with others and it affects me also, I see so much wrong but I can't do anything about it. How can I just stop caring?
