New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?

Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve? 79 by dondraper36 | 91 comments on Hacker News. Recently, I cannot help but notice how shy and socially awkward I might be at times, which is quite frustrating. To be fair to myself, I am not awful in social situations in that depending on the context I can be seemingly confident and calm, especially when I am among people I know and the context is familiar. When it comes to new people and places, everything changes dramatically. My voice changes, my posture changes, everything changes. I can start being awkward in all possible senses. The discomfort gets to the point where I blush and this physical state of vulnerability and self-doubt of course makes things even worse :) I understand that all of that relates to self-esteem and phychology in general therefore my question. It's common to advise hitting on the gym, which I just started doing last week. Funnily, the gym is the place where I last noticed my aw...

Launch HN: Azuki (YC W22) – All-you-can-read manga subscription 36 by BasouKazuma | 26 comments on Hacker News. Hey there, we’re Abbas, Evan, Adela, Krystyn, and Ken from Azuki ( https://www.azuki.co/ ). We’re a subscription service for reading digital manga (Japanese comics) on Web, iOS, and Android. With Azuki you can easily read official translations of the latest chapters or dive into our back catalog of hit manga and hidden gems. We’re in a golden age of manga. More and more series are getting translated and released in English, but publishers still can’t keep up with fan demand. Print shortages due to Covid and the long production pipeline of print books mean that lots of series take months or years to get official releases in English. And believe it or not, print sales still dwarf ebook sales for English manga! We are huge manga fans and wanted a way to easily access lots of new manga without filling up our bookshelves, paying for thousands of individual ebooks, or resorting ...

Ask HN: Do I have to host all data in the EU to comply with GDPR? 9 by oliv__ | 6 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I've had some EU-based potential customers ask whether I could host their data separately on EU located servers. I've been Googling around to get a definitive answer as to whether this is an absolute requirement or whether there is an easier way around it. For reference, my current setup includes servers in US, a database on Google Cloud and a cloud-based ElasticSearch instance. Any insight or experience with this would be greatly appreciated!

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How can scam callers fake a mobile phone number?

Ask HN: How can scam callers fake a mobile phone number? 33 by fxtentacle | 22 comments on Hacker News. I'm with T-Mobile and I just received a phone call on my mobile phone from another number where everything except for the last 3 digits was exactly matching my own number. I found that suspicious, but I was curious enough to pick up the call. The other person greeted me with "We are very important this is Interpol!" in seriously broken English, so I suspected a spam call and hung up to try to call them back. That didn't work because the phone number they were calling me from does not actually exist. Like I immediately get the T-Mobile announcement informing me that this is an invalid number. Now I am wondering: - How can a spam caller call me with a source phone number that does not exist? - Shouldn't my mobile phone network verify that the caller - which was also inside their network - is a valid subscriber? Otherwise, how can they bill someone for this call...

Show HN: Dockerized – Run CLI tools without installation 16 by datastack | 7 comments on Hacker News. Dockerized is like npx for unix tools: Run popular cli tools without installation. Just the original command, but with 'dockerized' in front. - dockerized apps can access the current directory and read/modify files, just like native apps. - no need to know which docker image this package comes from. - support for tools which don't have an official docker image. - container cleaned up after use. - ability to specify the version. - version specification per directory (share exact versions with your team mates). The inner workings are pretty simple, it's just a docker-...

Launch HN: Kable (YC W22) – All-in-one platform for API products 34 by asommer12 | 17 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN! I’m Adam from Kable ( https://kable.io ). We make it easy to build great API products. Kable takes care of all of the things that pull you away from your core business – API keys and authentication, usage-metering and billing, invoicing your customers, dashboards for tracking key metrics, evolving pricing to optimize revenue, surfacing usage dashboards to your customers – so you can focus on what’s most important. Every API developer has to deal with important but unsexy responsibilities like “How will I securely manage API keys?” “How am I going to track which customers are using which parts of my product?” “How am I going to monitor usage of my API, and how can I make that information available to customers?” “Billing is complicated, invoicing is time-consuming, when am I going to find time to automate that?” This is the stuff we take care of. I led the billing tea...

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How do a prepare mentally for war?

Ask HN: How do a prepare mentally for war? 16 by kypro | 16 comments on Hacker News. I've seen some posts here about preparing for a nuclear attack, but I don't think I'm prepared mentally for war of any kind. I grew up in the UK during the 90s so I've obviously had a very sheltered life. The two most difficult things I've ever gone through is losing a job and having my heart broken. If nuclear war happened, assuming I survived I'm not sure I'd be able to cope with the real suffering that would follow. I'm also not sure how I'd cope if I was drafted into a more conventional war. The idea of being cold, dump, tried and hungry for weeks on end seems unbearable to me. I also have no idea how I'd cope without seeing my partner for what could be months not knowing if she's safe, or even still alive. I'm terrified that the world I was raised for will not be my future. I am scared and I've not been able to focus on anything else since thi...

Show HN: I made a cloud security product that actually saves time 20 by david_obrien | 9 comments on Hacker News. I have been a Cloud Security Consultant for over 13 years and all that experience I put into building ARGOS Cloud Security. Probably the most common thing I've seen was teams spending loads of time manually investigating alerts from security products. Detecting security issues is not what it’s ever been about, but about the investigation of these detected issues. If you don’t have time to investigate everything, then what’s the point? Organizations spend time and money on security consultants to help them investigate their environments, but these are often only point-in-time engagements, where, once done, nothing "reusable" is left behind. The cloud environment might be in slightly better shape, but maybe only for a short period, before the next contractor must come in to start the process all over again. Show HN: I made a web game called Almost Pong 40 by lessmilk | 12 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN! I made many small web games in the past with Unity or Phaser. But this time I wanted to make something completely on my own. So I coded a basic game framework in plain JavaScript, and used it to make Almost Pong. This was a really fun project that taught me a lot about JavaScript, and I plan to make more minimalist games with this framework. Interesting fact: Almost Pong doesn't load any assets, all sprites and sounds are generated with code. Happy to answer questions, and please let me know if you have any feedback on the game. Thanks!
